While I have been privileged to have worked at the January auctions in the Scottsdale, Arizona area a few times before 2020, it’s difficult to fully grasp the scope of activities and events there, with so many auctions and thousands of fabulous collector cars available. Even for a collector-car auction industry insider! Drawing thousands of ‘Snowbirds’ and likely many more industry participants, every January Auction Week at Scottsdale brings something of interest for everybody fortunate enough to be there, whether on personal time or working. Thankfully, most every major auction company will be present for 2022, with live, onsite auction events, or at least an onsite presence.

For its part, Santa Monica, California-based elite auctioneer Gooding & Company will host a hybrid event in sync with the Scottsdale auction calendar. Named the Geared Online Scottsdale Edition, it will combine onsite previews of the auction vehicles at Scottsdale Hangar One, with bidding via Gooding’s proprietary Geared Online system, which has been proven successfully over a number of online-only vehicle and automobilia auctions since mid-2020.

An exclusive viewing event will be available for registered bidders – please contact Gooding & Company directly for details and times for this specific opportunity. Auction previews will be held on the following dates and times:

Bidding commences on Monday, January 24, and lots will begin closing at 10:00am MST on Friday, January 28. According to Gooding & Company, the complete online auction catalogue will launch on Tuesday, January 18, with full photo and video galleries and text descriptions found at www.goodingco.com or within the company’s iOS or Android mobile apps.

Vehicle offerings are pleasingly diverse, in the Gooding & Company tradition, spanning the 1910s through the 2000s, curated for maximum appeal, consistent with the sporting flavor of the Scottsdale auctions. Ten of the vehicles offered are from the collection of the late Hollywood TV and movie legend Richard Donner, whose many credits since the 1960 included The Twilight Zone, Gilligan’s Island, The Wild Wild West, Superman (1978), the ‘80s cult classic The Goonies (1985), the Lethal Weapon series (1987-98), and many more box-office successes. Known for years as a true enthusiast who actually drove and enjoyed his classics regularly, the cars from the Donner Estate Collection represent the cars Mr. Donner admired and longed for during his earlier years, ultimately becoming owned and enjoyed as finances and time allowed.

Period California-style hot rods and postwar European Sports/GT cars including the Ferrari Dino 246 GTS and 2005 ford GT are also represented, delivering a compelling and very well-orchestrated auction lineup. The full auction docket is now online with full descriptions and details added to the Gooding & Company website as of Tuesday, January 18th, so we urge you to check back for updates there regularly to stay abreast of this fabulous and interesting Scottsdale auction event!
