Originality is frankly an often-abused term of reference when it comes to classic cars, but from time to time, wonderful exceptions rise to the surface. This 1960 Buick Electra Sedan is a wonderful and well-preserved case in point, with the original body, paint, interior, and powertrain. Nothing but careful maintenance to maintain its readiness for cruising and showing enjoyment.
This wonderful and carefully preserved 1960 Buick Electra Sedan is a two-owner car from new and a true “survivor”. According to the original Bill of Sale dated April 11, 1960, the Electra was fitted with a dealer-installed rear radio speaker and sold by Jackson, Michigan’s Blain Buick, Inc. to the first owner, who retained his prized Electra until his death. Since he was reportedly an avid Michigan State Spartans fan, the handsome green and white two-tone exterior finish and green interior were a perfect match for his favourite team.
Both the interior and exterior remain completely original and quite impressive notwithstanding the car’s age. The doors, hood, and trunk open and close with vault-like solidity, the brightwork remains shiny, all original emblems and insignias remain (including the original dealer script), the headliner is properly in place, and the door panels, trunk compartment, and upholstery remain startlingly nice.
Currently showing fewer than 101,000 original miles (the odometer only recently rolled over at 100,000 miles), the Electra is powered by Buick’s 325-hp, 401 cu. in. “Wildcat 445” V-8 engine, so named for its mighty torque output of 445 pounds-feet. A Twin-Turbine automatic transmission provides smooth shifts, while the Electra’s torque-tube drive, full coil-spring suspension, and stout K-reinforced frame provide a driving experience that continues to belie the car’s size and long wheelbase.
Other great original features include Buick’s space-age dash layout with the “Mirromatic” speedometer, Speed Minder, parking-brake warning light, electric clock, “Sonomatic” AM radio, and stylized transmission indicator.
Enjoyed by the current owner and his family since acquisition from the original owner’s estate in 2006, the Electra is currently certified, road-registered, and fitted with seat belts front and rear. A newer set of Coker whitewall radial tires enhance ride and handling while maintaining period appearance. Recent mechanical care included replacement of the brake drums using correct and hard-to-find original finned-aluminum units, replacement of the water pump, new ball joints, and re-coring of the radiator. A recent and complete service included installation of a new fuel filter, chassis lubrication, and an oil and filter change.
Winter-stored on jacks since 2004, this true “time warp” Electra included an original Buick Chassis Service Manual, the original Bill of Sale, Owner’s Manual, an original mechanical specifications and tuning card, and other fascinating documents. A car cover accompanied as well. Handsome throughout and ready to enjoy, this 1960 Electra was, simply put, a wonderful find worthy of a caring a new owner drive, appreciate, and enjoy with their lucky family and friends! It was offered at the Toronto Fall 2012 Classic Car Auction, presented by Collector Car Productions, but passed unsold on the auction block; however, the auction company sold it soon thereafter.
