A True Icon – 1963 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk II BJ7 2+2 Sports Convertible

The inspired brainchild of Donald Healey, powered by readily available Austin four-cylinder and eventually six-cylinder engines, the Austin-Healey remains with the MGB as one of the definitive postwar British sports cars.

Accompanied by a legacy of racing success and continuing to enjoy the ardent appreciation of legions of fans today, the “Big Healey” is blessed by enthusiastic club interest, extensive parts support, and noted restoration specialists today. For enthusiasts looking for a proper British “wind in your hair” driving experience, the Austin-Healey is matched by few classic automobiles.

The introduction of the BJ7 model in 1962 brought significant improvements in comfort, including the introduction of roll-up windows, which replaced the former requirement for side curtains in case of foul weather.

In spring 2013, I was asked to make a detailed inspection of a BJ7 2+2 from 1963 that was available in Ontario. We had several potential buyers lined up; however, the owner lost his paperwork and could not confirm he owned the car!

An incomplete restoration of an overall complete car with much of the work already done, the Healey featured a rebuilt engine and gearbox (circa 2005), new electrics, and a solid body with most brightwork in place. Upside was quite good, with nice driver-quality examples trading in the $30,000 – $50,000 range and full-on, show-quality restored examples bringing considerably more.
